The Chelsea Fringe is an event running from 19 May 2012 to 10 June 2012 celebrating local gardening initiatives and meant to be an alternative to the better-known and somewhat exclusive Chelsea Flower Show. This is the first year it’s running and there’s a lot going on.

Here are some of the events we’re looking forward to most, in no particular order:

  • Chelsea Fringe Garden Party
    • Kicking off the Chelsea Fringe is a party at the Garden Museum. Music by Little Sparta, DJ sets by Richard Reynolds and Alan Boyd. Includes a 19th century-style barn dance, visual art by Jigantics and an afternoon tea.
      •  Tickets £6-£8. 21 May, 3 p.m. until late. Garden Museum — 5 Lambeth Palace Road.
  • Bicycling Beer Garden
    • This “beer garden” is pulled by bicycles and includes flowers planted in all sorts of boozy implements. Much more literal than it sounds!
      • Free, throughout the festival. Varying location.
  • Idler’s Grove
    • A medieval-styled garden that is sure to please your nose with its strong-smelling herbs.
      • 19 May to 10 June, closed Mondays. The Idler Academy — 81 Westbourne Park Road.
  • Front Line Tour of Guerrilla Gardens of SE1
    • A tour around the guerilla gardens near Elephant and Castle, hosted by the original guerilla gardener, Richard Reynolds.
      • 20 May, 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Free. Meet at the centre of the north roundabout, Elephant and Castle. Limited numbers, please RSVP.
  • Edible Olympics, Spitalfields City Farm
    • Daily farm-oriented athletic events, ranging from vegetable sculpting to a “fruit high jump” (What that is, we have absolutely no idea — but it sounds awesome).
      • 2 June to 9 June. Timetable here Free. Spitalfields City Farm — Buxton Street , E1 5AR.
  • Greenhouse Blues and Song
    • Winetasting, flowers and blues music — a fantastic combination!
  • Vertical Garden Towers
    • Exhibit at the Garden Museum showcasing vertical gardens.
      • 19 May to 16 June. Garden Museum — 5 Lambeth Palace Road.
  • Jazz and Art in Canons Park
    • Celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Canons Park garden with a tree planting and live jazz band.
    • 10 June, 1:00-5:00 p.m. Part of Open Garden Squares weekend (tickets). Canons Park garden — Donnefield Avenue,  HA8 6RH.
